Samuel Hopkins was born in Albermarle County, Va. During the Revolutionary War, he served under George Washington, and was captured in the Siege of Charleston. He moved to Kentucky in 1796, there serving as a judge and in the state House and Senate. During the War of 1812 he led Kentucky troops to Vincennes. General John W. Finnell was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on December 24, 1821. He graduated from Transylvania University at the age of seventeen and studied the art of printing with his father. He later studied law with Richard H. Menefee and graduated from Transylvania law school in 1841. Percival Butler, a native of Pennsylvania, was one of five brothers, all of whom gained some prominence through military service in the Revolutionary War. He came to Kentucky in 1784, settling in Port William in 1796. Butler served as Kentucky's first adjutant general from statehood in 1792 through the War of 1812.
